Free Will

We have been given a gift
A gift of free will
That we wear like a beautiful scarf
That we wear a little more often
Than is socially proper.
This scarf has a dark side
That, when worn for all to see,
Causes the ego to show –
Selfishness, greed, hate and violence.
When we choose to use this gift
We suffer.
Others suffer.
No one compliments us on our beauty.
Yet we love our gift
And wear it proudly
As if the gift were a thing of necessity.
We need to put ourselves first
And everyone else
Who does not think like us
Last.
Today I see
What hurt I can create
When I wear my beautiful dark scarf.
May I please return it?
May I please return to a place of
Divinity?
