Grieving
4/24/20
Today the entire world is grieving.
We have lost
Some very valuable pieces of our lives.
Some of us lost people.
Our hearts
As a collective
Go out to them.
Some of us lost jobs
A place to go daily
A sense of purpose.
Some of those who lost jobs
Collect unemployment
Or are not sure if they qualify.
They have lost security.
All of us have lost security
Of one kind or another.
There is no guarantee
Of money
Of food
Of our things that we have coveted
Most of our lives.
But most of all,
We all have lost
The easy ability to hug
Those who we usually hug.
Our friend,
Our adult children,
Our parents who live elsewhere,
Our friends who we meet
At the store
At church
At the dog park.
This is grief
And it is real
And it deep.

If we ignore it
And stuff it down
And put on our smiles
For our zoom meetings
And our hangouts with friends
On Houseparty and FaceBook video chats;
If we do not look at it
Squarely in the face
In OUR faces,
Then we suffer.
The energy of that grows and accumulates
Until we break down
And become useless
To comfort others
Because all we can do
Is beg to be comforted
By our own one smiling plastic face.
Instead,
Be vulnerable.
Contact that one friend
Who you can cry with,
Who will love you no matter what.
If you feel like there is no one
That fits that description,
Call a life coach.
No money?
Call the coronavirus hotline.
We need you.
We need your beauty.
We need your heart.
We are in this together.
Breathe.
Then
Grieve.
